Koh Tao Accommodation

Welcome to Turtle Island

Koh Tao is a tropical island paradise in the Gulf of Thailand. In Thai Koh Tao means 'turtle island'. It was so named because of the shape of the island. Coincidentally, the island is also an important breeding ground for Hawksbill turtles and Green turtles.

Diving and Nature

Originally Koh Tao became famous as a Mecca for divers. There are some great dive sites near Koh Tao. These include Sai Daeng, Mango Bay and Tanote Bay. Koh Tao is also near the famous dive spots of Sail Rock, Chumphon Pinnacles and Angthong National Marine Park. Prices for fun dives and dive courses are very reasonable. There are over 40 dive schools in Koh Tao. Most of them with the highest accreditation and safety record. Only the Great Barrier Reef in Australia attracts more people to do their PADI Open Water course than Koh Tao. For advice about dive schools and a list of some of the best dive schools in Koh Tao see our diving section.

Beaches and Nightlife

Over the years things have changed. People still come to Koh Tao for scuba diving, but many more also come for the secluded bays around the island that offer white sands, coconut palms, unspoiled nature and a good selection of accommodation ranging from cheap bungalows to luxury resorts.

The main beach (and the longest beach) is Sairee Beach. Here you will find the best range of accommodation, the best amenities and the best night life. The second most popular beach is Chalok Baan Kao in the south. It is a more peaceful beach than Sairee that is near some great and virtually deserted beaches. The jewel in the crown, however, is the 3 small islands just off the north-west coast called Nang Yuan. The islands are joined by a sand bank. The effect is a stunning area of double sided beaches.
